Acne is one of the most common inflammatory skin problems, affecting upwards of 50 million Americans each year, according to the American Association of Dermatology. While acne usually being ins puberty during the middle and later years of adolescence, acne can last well into adulthood and leave scars in the face even when acne breakouts are no longer an issue.

While all skin types and acne scars are unique to the individual, there are ways to reduce the appearance of acne scars for smoother, softer skin. If you struggle with acne scarring and would like to find remedies for this common issue, here are tips for eliminating the appearance of acne scars. How Do I Eliminate Acne Scars?

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains many antioxidants that can stimulate healing, which is why it is an age-old home remedy for treating and soothing a number of inflammatory issues, including acne and acne scars. In order for scars to heal efficiently, they need the proper combination of hydration and soothing. You may be aware that aloe vera heals and soothes sunburns, and it can do the same for acne scars. Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer and astringent that can effectively reduce irritation, swelling, redness, all while removing dead cells and excess oil that can clog pores.

Get an aloe plant so you can apply fresh aloe to acne scars twice daily. You can use the aloe vera right off of the aloe leaf and gently dab it on areas of your face and body where scarring has occurred. Make an aloe vera mask by combining aloe with coconut oil. Smooth over the face and let it sit for 10-20 minutes.

Shea Butter

Shea butter has been known to reduce the appearance and texture of stretch marks, which is why it is ideal for reducing the appearance of acne scars. Shea butter, especially raw, unrefined, unfiltered shea butter, has many nutrients that can help the skin look and feel softer, smoother, and more radiant.

Avoid buying store-bought shea butter that has been refined with other ingredients and fragrances that could irritate your skin. Instead, find raw unfiltered shea butter to apply to your skin daily to help improve firmness and smoothness on your skin.

Essential Oils

Like many of the natural remedies we’ve already mentioned, essential oils are an ideal way to reduce the appearance of acne scars while nourishing healthy skin that looks and feels smooth. Essential oils like lavender and peppermint have natural pain relieving properties that also reduce inflammation. Tea tree oil is one of the best ways to soothe acne breakouts and acne scars as it is a natural astringent. Neroli oil and rose oil can both moisturize and nourish scars and other skin imperfections.

Apply an essential oil of your choice to acne scars daily. You can combine essential oils or even infuse your daily moisturizers and cleansers with a few drops of essential oils. Coconut Oil and Honey

Both coconut oil and honey have natural healing properties to help with scarring. Coconut oil is high in omega fatty acids, which means it can penetrate deeply into the scars to restore moisture and restore a healthy glow to your skin. Honey naturally soothes, moisturizes, and softens the skin, which can help reduce the appearance of acne scars.

When these two ingredients are combined in a mask or used as a daily moisturizer, you can achieve softer skin with fewer blemishes caused by the scars. When used as a moisturizer, simply smooth over the area you wish to treat, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and then gently wipe away with a warm towel. You can add another layer of coconut oil if you choose.

Avoid Inflammatory Foods

Oftentimes, the foods we consume can cause an inflammatory response in the body and may even contribute to existing inflammation on the skin — including scars caused by acne. Eating foods and drinking beverages high in fat, sugar, and sodium can contribute to inflammation. Limiting these foods, however, and replacing them instead with foods packed with antioxidants, omega fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals can assist your other efforts to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
